The Varanasi Story

The Varanasi Rug Story

Our rugs are all handmade by Amit and his team in the beautiful Indian city of Varanasi, one of the oldest cities on the planet. Why there? Because this is the world capital of old school rug making where the techniques haven’t changed in 500 years (except the bit when they subject the rugs to a little bit of torture to give them an aged look!).

The Process

Each rug takes around 10 days for several people to make from start to finish. First the wool is hand dyed. Then the skilled weavers get down to business using their pit looms which is a truly amazing thing to witness. Once the rug has taken shape it goes through several days of trimming and stone washing to give it a lovely lived-in, vintage feel. If it sounds archaic that’s because it is.

After all, if it ain’t broke…
